30: Little Things Wednesday

Little things Wednesday

This past weekend I met a little four year old girl who sat next to me, looked at my nails and asked “Why don’t you have nail polish?” In the most serious of tones. I sighed and tried to explain how nail polish on my fingers makes me so vain. She looked away. Bored.

*On a serious side note, it took coming to South Africa for me to stop saying cutex instead of nail polish. To any of my sisters, I am likely to ask for cutex but anywhere outside of the house, I am set to say “nail polish”.

  • For the freedom to worship God and to have a personal and meaningful relationship with Him.
  • For a few years in the recent past I was involved in a four-part bible study called BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) International and this week with news reports of the Pope and Desmond Tutu, I was reminded again of why it is important to read God’s word and interpret it for myself (obvs in line with His teachings).
  • We have had such a mild Winter this year and I am utterly grateful for the many beautiful days we have had!
  • The unquestioning love of a mother? Definitely not a little thing but manifested in so many little ways each day that we live and experience it.
  • I borrowed library books in June and they were due at the start of July, I returned them over three weeks later and the fine was miniscule. I love it when such surprises come along you way!
  • Finding a parking spot close to the entry into the main building: once, while dropping my mum off at the airport (and check-in had already started) and secondly, at the office because by the time I usually get her allocated parking for the company is often almost full.
  • I have resumed Pilates on Tuesday mornings! Only the best activity ever!

I have tried to come up with a weekly serial that I could do here with little success, largely because I would always pick something so complex that would be difficult to replicate in subsequent rounds. This time, I decided to do something simple – talk about the simple things that struck me that week.

  • Going to Nairobi and Kampala and meeting with family and friends that I have not seen in over 18 months.
  • Getting over myself and going to spend the night at my sisters marital home.
  • Receiving beautiful earrings, bangles and a chain from a dear friend!
  • Starting a new job that requires me to carry a packed lunch and always having something fresh to carry.
  • Scheduling a meeting in Bedfordview and discovering a lovely part of Johannesburg.
  • Driving my mom’s car around the farm.
  • Interlocking my locks and having them beautifully styled.
  • Sunday lunch with a family friend while listening to local Kenyan music.

Sometimes life gets so busy and we forget to smell the roses and notice the little things. And in the last few months, I have become very guilty of that and so this is a call to myself to go back to basics and start noticing the little things once again.
